Within Cincinnati’s vibrant art scene, local artist Greg Matsey has been making waves with his unique approach to pointillism, a painting technique reminiscent of the works of masters such as Georges Seurat and Vincent Van Gogh.

He has experimented with various artistic techniques over the years, but it was his first pointillism painting, “Starry Night Cincy,” that became an instant hit. This tribute to Cincinnati’s mesmerizing skyline marked the start of his successful career.

“I always loved the downtown skyline,” Matsey recalls. “I remember going to Reds games as a kid and loving the city.”

Rather than brushing strokes of color onto a canvas, pointillism involves creating an entire image using small, distinct dots of color. From a distance, one’s eyes and mind blend the dots to form a full image.

Over time, Matsey has expanded his collection of pointillism pieces that depict Downtown Cincinnati’s iconic landmarks in his unique style. Matsey’s passion for his hometown as depicted in each piece is tangible.

Among his top-selling art works are “The City Where Pigs Fly,” “Union Terminal Sunset,” “Queen of Cincinnati,” “Bridge to Eden,” and “Lavender Haze at Findlay Market.”

Matsey participates in about 20 art shows in the tri-state area every year. During these events, he engages in lively conversations with local art enthusiasts who have become avid collectors of his work.
