Planning your retirement and understanding financial markets can be daunting tasks for some people. It requires a professional team to help you attain your goals.
Whether or not you’re a client, Horter Investment Management offers classes to people who are about to retire and to college students who are about to enter the workforce.
“We developed these classes to give people not only the facts and information about investing, but also the insight on how they can protect themselves and not outlive their money,” says Jason Pyles, Vice President of Education Services at Horter.
Plan Your Retirement courses meet over several sessions and are offered 10 times each year. These courses take people through budget worksheets to help them better manage their household expenditures while striving to improve their overall financial situations.
“Most of these students are 55 or older and typically do not grasp all of the serious decisions they have to make before and during retirement,” says Pyles. “It is purely educational. The classes are affordable as attendees only cover the cost of books and homework packets.”
“One of the more asked about topics is Social Security and when it should be taken,” says Pyles. “In order to maximize Social Security, we think you should look at all of your options. Even though many people start taking it at 62, they are really losing out and taking a lesser percentage than if you were to plan to start drawing at age 70.”
The classes are held at the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University and at Horter’s educational center and headquarters in Symmes Township.
Horter also wants young people (high school and college students) to think about investment management and 401k participation before they begin working through their Internship Program. This four-day course introduces high school and college students to basic concepts of investing and opportunities in the financial services industry and ends with how they can invest wisely.
“We show them how traditional investing has worked and how it might not work going forward,” says Pyles. “We teach them about tactical investing and how their money managers could go into cash or a risk-off position. The more understanding people have, they better off they’ll be.”
