Petrolhead Paradise: The Top US City Breaks For Car Enthusiasts

City Breaks For Car Enthusiasts

Obsessed with cars? There are plenty of attractions for petrolheads across the US ranging from legendary racetracks to impressive motor museums. In this brief guide, we’ll speed through five of the top city destinations for car enthusiasts and point out some of the top things to see and do.

Austin, Texas

On top of boasting an incredible music scene and top BBQ cuisine, Austin is also known for its many auto-related attractions. It’s home to the Circuit of the Americas – a formula 1 track that hosts the US Grand Prix each year. The city also hosts a giant annual car show for vintage hot rods known as the Lonestar Roundup. Other attractions include the Austin Rock & Roll Car Museum and the Tesla Gigafactory (which you can take tours of).

Detroit, Michigan

Nicknamed ‘Motor City’, Detroit was famously the birthplace of car brands like Chrysler and Ford and is often regarded as the city that put the US on wheels. It’s home to the Detroit Auto Show – one of the largest car shows in the US. The Henry Ford Museum is also situated in the nearby town of Dearborn and features an extensive car collection. When exploring attractions in Detroit Michigan, don’t forget to consider some of the other non-car-related attractions like the Motown Museum and Detroit Institute of Arts,

Indianapolis, Indiana

The world’s largest single day sporting event, the Indy 500, takes part in Indianapolis each year at its famous speedway. If you can’t afford tickets to this event, it could still be worth paying a visit to the Indiana Motor Speedway Museum or checking out one of the many other racing events that are held there throughout the year. Consider also checking out the Dallara IndyCar Factory where the IndyCar vehicles are built.

Daytona Beach, Florida

Daytona Beach offers an exciting mix of sun, sand and speed. NASCAR famously started here and its beach was used to record early speed records. The Daytona International Speedway is definitely worth taking a tour around. In February, this speedway hosts the Daytona 500 – a world-famous 500 mile endurance race – which is an event every petrolhead needs to experience once. Fans of motorsports should also visit the Motorsports Hall of Fame to learn about the history of NASCAR.

Los Angeles, California

A roundup of the best petrolhead destinations couldn’t be complete without LA – a city where the freeways are catwalks for supercars and where you’ll find some of the most impressive car collections in the country. The Petersen Automotive Museum contains many rare vehicles in its ‘vault’ including the Popemobile and Steve McQueen’s 1956 Jaguar. The Nethercutt collection meanwhile contains a collection of 250 vintage cars dating back to 1898 – all in showroom condition and drivable. Several other showrooms can be found throughout the city (check out this LA car collection guide for more info). Los Angeles also has many movie locations where famous car races and chases were filmed such as the LA river (which features in Grease, Terminator 2 and the 2003 Italian Job).
